Once you have submitted your completed documents along with any required verification, we will verify your rental history, credit history, and income. Our approval process usually takes  no more than 72 hours.

Citizen residents are able to pay rent online using the Livly app. Automatic one-time or recurring payments may be set up using your bank account, credit card, or debit card. We also accept personal checks, money orders, and cashiers checks. We do not accept cash payments for rent. 

Yes, insurance is mandatory at our community. You will need to have at least $100,000 dollars in liability coverage for your apartment. If you have not purchased a policy, you will be automatically enrolled in SPM's CLIP Resident Liability Insurance Program. If you have opted to obtain the required liability insurance through a third party, please upload proof of coverage (declarations page) at the link here. The policy is not personal liability insurance or renter's insurance. The policy does not cover any of your personal belongings, additional living expenses, or liability arising out of bodily injury or property damage to any third party. At Citizen, we've got the internet covered. Enjoy super-fast speeds thanks to an in integrated 10 GB infrastructure with dedicated fiber & overlapping wifi coverage. Once you're a resident, all you need to do is log on. 

Yes, you can choose to end your lease early. Breaking your lease will result in the fee amount specified in your leasing agreement. 60-day notice is required when you are breaking your lease, and you must pay the fee and turn in your keys on the day you vacate your home. 

At Citizen, all you need to do is contact Alabama Power to set up your electricity. All other utilities are included in rent.

Our high-speed Internet*, water, sewer, gas, trash, and pest control are included in your rent at Citizen. *There is a mandatory monthly $85 technology bundle fee for our integrated tech service. Please see the features page for more information.

Amenities

Citizen is Birmingham's first micro apartment community. Our innovative studio homes are designed to maximize 400 square feet of space to create a fully-equipped apartment living experience. Our 525 square foot loft homes are currently reservable through Mint House for short term rentals. 

Street parking is available near our The Citizen Birmingham. Check out bhamparking.com to find out more about parking near our apartments. We recommend utilizing BPA Lot #8.

One of the unique things you'll discover about Citizen Birmingham is how we view the nature of amenities. We think Birmingham is the greatest amenity around, and we're providing our residents with exceptional access to it. Take a look at our features page to see what we offer at our community and how we connect you to the Magic City itself. 

While we don't have a dog park on-site, we are a pet-friendly community and provide a pet-wash station for our four-legged residents. If you're wanting to take Fido out for some free play or a leashed stroll, there are many dog parks and pet-friendly trails just minutes from our location. 

Residents of Citizen Birmingham enjoy a vented washer-dryer combo unit in their apartment. 

We welcome pets at Citizen Birmingham! Dogs, cats, and small animals such as hampsters and fish that stay in their own enclosures are welcome at our community. For more information, visit our amenities page and contact our friendly team for detailed specifics on our pet policy. 

Residents of Citizen enjoy a stainless steel appliance package including a refrigerator, oven/range, a built-in microwave, and dishwasher. A vented washer/dryer combo unit is also included in every home. 

Our studio apartments are unfurnished and ready for your personal touch. 

Yes! If you desire a furnished apartment, our partner, CORT Furniture, can assist with your furniture needs as well as  items such as linens, cookwear, electronics, and decor. 

Citizen does not provide a parking deck, but has a convenient bike storage area. Thanks to our location in the heart of Downtown Birmingham, we believe other forms of transportation best suite the lifestyle we offer. With ample public transportation available, exceptional walkability, rentable e-scooters right outside, and our Tesla Rideshare service through Envoy, we think residents will find the need for daily driving significantly reduced. We also have dedicated drop off zones for delivery drivers.

Citizen is able to offer residents incredibly fast internet thanks to our 10 Gigabite Infrastructure and dedicated fiber network. With overlapping WiFi coverage, upload and download speeds are significantly elevated over standard service options. Check out our features page to learn more. 

Maintenance

We will thoroughly clean and inspect your apartment before you move in, address any maintenance issues, and provide a checklist for you to fill out and note any additional issues that are present upon your move-in. This checklist will be reviewed upon your move-out to ensure you are not charged for existing damages.

As long as you have given us permission to enter, you do not have to be home for our maintenance techs to service your apartment. 

Yes, residents enjoy on-site and 24-hour emergency maintenance service.

If your apartment is in need of maintenance service, you can reach out to our team in several ways. Simply submit your maintenance requests through the Livly app and let our dedicated, professional team take care of your needs. You can also call, email, or drop by the office at your convenience. Livly is the most efficient way to notify our team of non-emergency maintenance needs. 

The Citizen Birmingham provides residents with 24-hour emergency maintenance service. Please note, if you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately. If you are experiencing a maintenance emergency, do not place a request via Livly. Call 1-205-918-8374 and you will be given the option to choose emergency maintenance from our menu. This will quickly route your call to the appropriate party. 

At The Citizen Birmingham, your phone is your key! Our smart lock technology means you don't have to rely on a physical key to access your apartment. 

Location

The Citizen Birmingham is less than a quarter mile from Publix Super Market at 20 Midtown. You'll also find a variety of marts and markets close to our apartments on 18th Street South, such as Vinyard Food Market Downtown in Thomas Jefferson Tower and Wilson Market. Plus, The Farmers Market at Pepper Place is roughly 1 mile from our community and open on Saturdays from 7 AM - 12 PM.

The Red Cat Café @ Railroad Park, several Starbucks locations, Panera Bread, Hero Doughnuts & Buns, and Dunkin' are all within walking distance of The Citizen Birmingham. 

The Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is a 7.6 miles from The Citizen Birmingham via I-20E/I-59 N.

UAB Hospital, Children's Hospital, Shipt, Alabama Power, Regions are top employers in our area and close to your home at Citizen Birmingham. 

Our apartments are located in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama and within 15 minuts of the suburban areas of  Mountain Brook, Hoover, Homewood, and Vestavia Hills to the  South, and Fultondale and Gardendale to the North.  

Citizen is only 3 blocks from UAB Hospital & Childrens Hospital,and our apartments are also near  Railroad Park, Regions Field and Rotary Trail Birmingham.

Birmingham is full of pet-friendly green spaces. There are a variety of fenced, free-running dog parks as well as leash-required walking trails. Green Springs Dog Park, Good Dog - Bar, Park & Daycare, George Ward Park, Rotary Trail, and Railraod Park all welcome dogs. 

Public transportation is ideal if you live at The Citizen Birmingham. We are on the Max Transit and Birmingham Xpress routes. Plus, we offer Tesla ridesharing through Envoy at The Citizen Birmingha. You'll also find rentable e-scooters right out front. 

The Citizen is zoned for the following Birmingham City Schools - Glen Iris Elementary School, Booker T. Washington (6-8), and Parker High School.

Our apartments are also close to several Birmingham private schools, public academies, and alternative schools, including  The Alabama School of Fine Arts, Advent Episcopal School, St. Rose Academy,  and Magic City Acceptance Academy, Phillips Academy, E.P.I.C, Ramsey, Princeton Alternative Elementary, and W.J. Christian School. 

The Citizen is located at the intersection of 18th Street South and 3rd Avenue South and near 20th Street South, University Blvd, HWY 78, I-20/59, and I-65.

The Citizen Birmingham is located at 300 18th St. S Birmingham, AL 35233. You can easily get step-by-step to our micro-studio apartments for rent in Downtown Birmingham by visiting the maps page and inputting your address. 

The Citizen's location is ideal for Downtown City Living. Our apartments offer exceptional walkability to major employers like UAB, recreational hot spots such as Railroad Park and Regions Field, and a wide variety of restaurants and bars, such as The Fennec, Good People Brewing, and Wasabi Juan's. 

Birmingham is rich in art, history, and culture, and there are many museuems close to Citizen, including, but not limited to The Birmingham Museum of Art, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark,  Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, McWane Science Center, and Negro Southern League Museum. Parks also abound in The Magic City. Railroad Park, Kelly Ingram Park, and City Walk Bham and many others are nearby. 

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is within walking distance as UAB Hospital and Childrens Hospital. Also close to The Citizen is Ascension St. Vincent's Birmingham, and UAB Callahan Eye Hospital.  

The Citizen Birmingham is a prime location for enjoying Barons Baseball at Regions Field, football games at Protective Stadium, and a variety of concerts and events at the BJCC and Bartow Arena.

Bathrooms feature chrome hardware and glass enclosed showers.
